# Block types and functions

**Blocks** are how we refer to each individual question or group of questions because these represent a distinct unit of content that can be arranged and structured within the survey, similar to building blocks in construction.

## Types of blocks

There are many types of blocks that can be used in your consultation. They are split into 4 categories:

**Content:** Content blocks allow the inclusion of multimedia content, such as images, videos, documents, or links, within the survey to provide additional context or visual elements to participants.

**Choice:** Choice blocks include various question types that offer respondents a selection or choice, allowing respondents to select options from a predefined list.

**Text:** Text blocks enable respondents to provide open-ended responses, contact details, numbers, postcodes, websites, or file uploads.

**Scale:** Scale blocks provide a range-based response format, allowing respondents to rate or evaluate items on a numerical scale, such as rating satisfaction levels or indicating preferences on a number range scale.

Common block types include Content/Media, Dropdown, Multiple Choice, Matrix, Rank, Date, Yes or No, Long Text, Single-line Text, Email, Website, Number, Postcode, File Upload, Rating, and Scale.
